The world is a fine place and worth fighting for

(NOTE: This post was written last night before the incident at MIT and subsequent manhunt)

There are a lot of bad people out there who (for one reason or another) want to hurt others. It’s scary thinking that at any given time there there are people out there who want to cause mass murder. It does make some people lose hope in humanity.

But I hope in humanity. I believe there are more good people out there than bad. On 9/11 there were only a handful of people who caused all the that happened, but there were hundreds, thousands, maybe even millions of people who did what they could to help. Fire fighters ran up into the flaming tower to try and save as many people as they could. Regular bystanders pulled people out of ash and rubble to safety.

This past Monday a tragedy happened, where some tried to harm as many people as possible by setting off explosions at the finish line of the Boston Marathon. That was the work of a few. But there have been many more who stepped up and helped where they can. Everyone in the area who weren’t hurt ran to he help of those who were.

Crowdsourcing is a new concept where a group of people online contribute to a job or service. It is basically combining the efforts of many that may a job can be done quicker and more efficient.

Why do I bring this up? Finding out who did this is a tall task and an online community called Reddit took it upon themselves to help the Boston PD and FBI find the suspects, and they didn’t disappoint. They thumbed through thousands of photos and came up with a few persons of interest. None of these people (at the time of this writing) are suspects, but the fact that the people in this online community took it upon themselves to do what they could to help says a lot about the human race.

Mr. Rogers has a quote that I love and agree with whole heartedly.

The next time something like this happens remember to look for the helpers. Look for those who put their own interests aside and help those in need. Remember that despite that fact that there are bad people out there who want to hurt others, there are WAY, WAY more who want to help and do good.

In fact, BE one of those people. Do what you can, even if it’s donating your time, money, resources to help those in need. If we focus on the negative of humanity, we will see the negative of humanity. But, if we focus on the positive, WE WILL BE OVERWHELMED!
